In love with Tony Ward

I am in love. His name is Tony Ward and yes I am in love. I don’t ordinarily post anything about designers or their collections. Heck I don’t ordinarily watch television but this past weekend my eye caught the designs of Tony Ward’s Fall 2011/2012 show. As any woman, I love pretty dresses but I tend to err on the side of quirky more than uber girly - it's just how I roll. I have since changed and the pictures below explain why.

He’s originally from Lebanon and studied in Paris where he worked with Dominique Morlotti and Claude Montana for Lanvin, Gianfranco Ferré for Dior, Karl Lagerfeld for Chloé. In saying this, I’m sure you can pick up their influence in his work. He marries femininity with bold structure and glamour of days gone by in a way that makes my heart skip a beat. We heart Tony Ward.

P.S A part of me so wants to rock some takkies or docs with these. Is it wrong? Is it?

Eve Arnold: 1912 - 2012

She took some of the most iconic potraits of Marilyn Monroe after falling in love with the camera when she was given one from her boyfriend. Whether that relationship stood the test of time is not of importance, what is though, is that she found her calling. She documented the 'the poor, the old and the underdog'. We at Old Street take our hats off to one classy and creative lady. May we all find our calling and share our genius with the world.

For studs sake!

Recently I decided to give my wardrobe a bit of an errrrr let's just call it reorganising. After finding 13 pairs of jeans of which I only probably really wear four, the excess was a bit too much to stomach. The interesting part was while going through my clothes I discovered an awful lot of studs. How they found their way into my life, heaven only knows but they are there.

They can be found on some tops, shoes, trainers, tank tops, jackets and four pairs of boots. While I don't think it ever occurred to me that I'm an actual lover of all things studded. While writing this I am wearing a studded yellow elephant tee – who knew?

And we're back ... hello 2012 nice to meet you

Yes, we're going big or at least when we're wearing these shoes, we'll feel larger than life. No blog posts in such a loooong time - feels really awkward sitting here. Well December was really crazy. We had three markets at the Labia up until 23 December, the shop was busy, we made plans for the new year, went away for Christmas and slept through new year and the rollercoaster starts all over again!

We feel really blessed for being able to take a love for quirky fashion as well as providing something affordable to people out there. We have some plans in the pipeline for 2012 but will always promise to keep our prices real ... we're in Africa afterall!

Here are our top ten moments for December:

1. When we finally acquired a changing room - it fell down just as a customer came out = PRICELESS!
2. A guy came in asking if we could lengthen his white pants with material he brought .... cream pillow cases = FUTURISTIC SWAG!
3. Young women walks in, she looks confused and says: "Oh, this is not my style". All we were thinking was "honey, neither is that train smash you're wearing" = SCHOOLED!
4. The wind at the Labia blowing the rails over and over and over = END OF DAYS!
5. Being invoiced for a market in someone's back yard where nobody pitched up = CLASSIC!
6. Driving 450kms for a surf trip only to eat fish and chips then head back two hours later and miss ringing in the new year = SELF SLICE!
7. My two-year old cousin praised for saying "no daddy, I'm not a bully". My two-year-old nephew doesn't need words - he acted like a cat with pitch-perfect meeow sounds and all = HOLLYWOOD CALLS!
8. Bought a pair of sunglasses at a Chinese store for R30, only to have the one lens pop out three hours later = ADVERT GOLD!
9. A lady buying her husband's ex-wife's vinyl (it was signed) from us so she could leave it on the bed for him to see. A brother and sister buying a jacket for their dad for Christmas, which was similar to one their mom threw out years ago because she didn't like it = CREEPY!
10. Germans haggling over a R50 blazer = CHEAP!

Retro tees ... because we can

The lovely ladies at The Dollhouse Clothing ordered some of our upcycled retro tees which they used in their latest shoot. Really chuffed, humbled and excited - who knew? who friggin knew?

And then there was ....

a shop!

It's been so long since I posted anything. There's a shop now and long hours I tell ya! It's def harder working for oneself but the benefits out way anything else. A few weeks ago we were selling from home and now we have a lil place of our own. We didn't plan on having a shop but life just happened (as it does).

We've done everything in the shop on a non-existent budget and making your own clothing rails with wire and wood ... let's just say it worked and that's all that matters. We will be selling coffee too and having a chill out section where you can listen to some old records and read some books.
